Friday May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia. This day aims to raise awareness and offers an opportunity for people to get together and reach out to one another. It’s about all people hoping for a prejudice-free world that can provide a place at the table for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation.

76 countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people everywhere continue to suffer violent attacks and discriminatory treatment.

The United Nations’ message is clear: LGBT rights are human rights. Together we will build a world that is free and equal.

In his typical fashion, Carl Sagan paints a clear picture of the struggle between the public perception of science and our increasing dependence on the scientifically-enabled infrastructure we rely on. The people of the United States have consistently failed to bridge this growing gap of required knowledge. Despite the efforts of science advocates like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michio Kaku, and even the immortal legacy of Sagan himself, US students still ranked 23rd in math and 31st in science in 2012. This is a fact that is somewhat embarrassing given that just 40 years ago we put men on the moon and led the world in technological development and the resulting economic growth. Of course, one of the easiest ways to get the United States back on track is to expose students to STEM fields in new, engaging, and exciting ways both inside and outside of the classroom.

As a result of its small budget (made even smaller by the recent sequester), NASA has had to cut back on several public outreach and advocacy programs, including activities such as STEM education events for schoolchildren, which can help inspire the next generation to enter into these fields and keep the United States competitive. NASA inspires children and adults of all fields to learn and dream not only about space science, but about exploration itself. NASA reminds us of the beauty that we can see every night by simply looking upwards. An investment in NASA is an investment in ourselves and our future.

Learning about astronomy is a character building experience as Carl Sagan once said. It’s a subject that inspires you to branch out to other disciplines like chemistry, geology, biology and so on. Neil deGrasse Tyson always talks about how in the 60’s, with the mission to land on the moon, NASA made us feel that we were dreaming about tomorrow. This type of thinking and inspiration resonated with kids and young adults to become scientists and to contribute something meaningful to society. NASA is an investment that will inspire anyone it gets a hold of to dream about tomorrow.

NASA at one point or another has wowed most of us. Now they are in a time of need where money is tight and funding is dwindling. It would be amazing to see NASA’s budget get doubled and feel that we could see a lot more of that wow factor. There are many people who want to change the world and I dare you to do just that. Start with one small step and take action today.
